In her own words

Sitting in silence in the dock, the five defendants struggled - from behind a glass screen - to survey Court 6, the scene of their week-long ordeal at Brighton Magistrates' Court.

A score or so of concerned citizens watched on from the public gallery. Two or three journalists sat and took notes. Seagulls screeched on the roof outside. Yesterday, for the first time, the court heard Caroline Lucas speak in her own words.

City bus fares go up by 10p

Most adult bus fares will increase by 10p from April 13, Brighton & Hove Buses has announced.

The increase means a rise of more than 4% on the price of a standard single journey, which currently costs £2.30.

But a majority of customers can save money by using "the key" or M-tickets.

Goal-shy Seagulls need to take chances

Brighton and Hove Albion are under pressure to up their goal-scoring rate or risk being cast adrift in the race for the Championship play-off places.

Oscar Garcia's side have found the net just 39 times in 37 league games so far this season - a record only worsened by six of the current bottom seven teams in the division.

It really does work... the testimonials:

Clare - Owner of Cannadine's Carpets, London Road, Brighton, says: "I was initially hesitant about placing an advert within the newspaper as I have had some unsuccessful adverts placed in other past publications. However, within two hours of the newspaper being out, I had a couple from Hove, who whilst having a coffee, had picked up a copy of Brighton & Hove Independent and were looking for new carpets for their home. They drove straight to my shop in Brighton and ended up ordering a large quantity from us!"
